Adding Casting Transmitters in Hotels: Do Existing TVs Need Modification? Practical Guide for Legacy Renovation

Nowadays, mobile screen casting has gradually become a basic guest experience in hotel rooms. After check-in, travelers connect their phones to hotel Wi-Fi and cast videos, photos and even meeting materials onto the in-room TV, which has become a common demand for many business travelers.

However, for numerous hotels that have been in operation for years, the real question is not “whether to enable screen casting”, but: can the existing TVs still be used? Does adding casting equipment mean replacing all TVs, rewiring cables, or even disrupting normal operations?

The answer is: replacement is not mandatory.

Screen casting upgrades can shift from full equipment replacement to partial retrofitting. By adapting casting transmitters to existing TVs and room networks, hotels can retain most original devices and decorations while adding screen casting capability to legacy TVs. This represents a more practical implementation approach for hotel legacy renovation.

I. Inherent Pain Points of Three Traditional Hotel Screen Casting Solutions

Solution 1: Enable full-network multicast for screen casting

Full multicast packet forwarding across the entire network is enabled to ensure AirPlay and DLNA devices can be discovered normally.

  • Advantages: Native casting for iOS and Android with direct device discovery, no QR code scanning required, delivering smooth user experience.
  • Risks: Multicast broadcasts across the whole network allow mobile phones to detect casting devices in all rooms on the same floor. Cross-room casting interference occurs easily, leading to guest privacy leakage, customer complaints, public opinion risks and claims, and failure of internal network security protection.

Solution 2: Strict security isolation via independent VLANs for each guest room

A separate VLAN is deployed for every guest room to block cross-room multicast broadcasts and fundamentally avoid cross-room casting interference.

  • Advantages: Isolated room networks with clear internal network boundaries, complying with cybersecurity control requirements under Decree No.176.
  • Drawback: Discovery packets such as mDNS and SSDP are blocked, so native Apple AirPlay cannot find casting devices, and only QR-code-based casting is available. This creates inconvenience for Apple users, easily triggers negative reviews and hurts OTA ratings.

Solution 3: TVs / casting devices broadcast independent Wi-Fi hotspots

Guests connect to the built-in Wi-Fi hotspot of the TV for screen casting.

  • Advantages: Casting traffic is independent.
  • Vulnerabilities: Guests access the internet through this hotspot, bypassing the hotel’s Portal real-name authentication system. This directly violates the real-name internet access requirement specified in Decree No.176, bringing risks of cybersecurity inspections and professional claims. Meanwhile, the built-in TV Wi-Fi has limited hardware performance; signals degrade behind walls and casting stutters. Stability is poor for concurrent multi-device access, making it unsuitable for large-scale commercial deployment.

Common industry challenge: Native casting experience, guest room network isolation and internet real-name compliance are difficult to achieve simultaneously.

II. AINOPOL Screen Casting Reflector Core Solution

AINOPOL adopts gateway-embedded screen casting reflector plus external room casting transmitters. The Dream series gateways natively support this capability. The casting reflector is enabled via function authorization. No changes are required to the basic configuration of existing switches or gateways, and it can be deployed in bypass mode.

✅ Preserve guest room VLAN isolation; full-network multicast will never be enabled
Three layers of networks — guest network, TV IoT network and management network — are strictly isolated. Cross-VLAN routing is not opened, multicast packets will not broadcast across rooms, eliminating cross-room casting risks at the source, while the original network security architecture remains fully intact.

✅ Multi-protocol proxy with native AirPlay compatibility, zero configuration for terminals
The screen casting reflector proxies and forwards mDNS/SSDP/DLNA/AirPlay and Lelink discovery packets.

  • Apple devices support native AirPlay mirror casting directly, no extra APP installation required.
  • Android and HarmonyOS support DLNA; mirror casting requires the Lelink APP.
  • PC screen mirroring requires the Lelink program.
Mobile phones and casting terminals in guest rooms require no network configuration changes. Devices within the same room can discover each other, while rooms remain fully isolated.

✅ Linked with hotel Portal real-name authentication; auditable casting sessions to meet Decree No.176 requirements
Screen casting capability is linked to the hotel Portal real-name authentication system. Guests reuse the hotel main Wi-Fi instead of TV hotspots and cannot bypass real-name authentication.
The system retains casting session logs, recording room number, TV MAC address, mobile terminal information and session start/end time. All sessions can be audited and traced to satisfy cybersecurity traceability requirements. A dynamic one-time QR code per screen can be enabled for secondary authorization verification, with exclusive casting lock to prevent screen hijacking.

✅ Centralized cloud management and O&M
The backend monitors real-time casting sessions, supports forced termination of abnormal sessions, visualizes device status and pushes policies in bulk. Chain hotels realize centralized management and reduce on-site maintenance visits.

Networking logic: Guest mobile phones reside in the guest VLAN, while casting transmitters sit in the TV IoT VLAN. The casting reflector performs protocol proxy forwarding. The two networks are physically isolated; only casting discovery and media streams are processed, and the internal network topology is not exposed externally.
For existing projects, external casting transmitters are added directly. For new-build or renovation projects, ITV gateways with integrated casting capability can be selected, eliminating extra hardware installation in guest rooms.

III. Deployment Modes

Legacy Renovation for Existing Hotels

Retain the original TV live broadcast system. Enable casting reflector authorization and purchase private casting licenses on Dream gateways in the equipment room. Guest rooms keep the original VLAN network, reuse hotel Portal real-name authentication. Secondary QR code verification can be activated, and devices connect to the operation & maintenance backend. Floor-by-floor deployment can be carried out without suspending hotel operations, protecting existing hardware investment.

The hotel casting upgrade solution requires no TV modification. Using an application-layer proxy approach, the casting reflector completes cross-segment casting discovery and media proxy inside the gateway. TVs retain their factory OS, the network maintains original isolation, and native casting experience is restored.

No TV replacement, no cable rewiring, no construction shutdown. Legacy renovation, go-live on the same day. Guests cast via QR code, while the hotel maintains full security control.

Starting now, purchase the M1 Dream Gateway and receive the screen casting reflector for free. The gateway handles compliance at the access layer, and the reflector delivers casting experience. Hotels do not need separate procurement and maintenance for two systems.

FAQ

Q: Do I need to enable full-network multicast to activate the casting reflector?
A: No. The casting reflector works as a protocol proxy and will not open cross-VLAN routing. Guest room VLAN security policies remain unchanged. Multicast packets are not broadcast across rooms, eliminating cross-room casting interference fundamentally.

Q: Can Apple AirPlay be used natively?
A: Yes. Within VLAN-isolated networks, the reflector proxies packets to enable native Apple AirPlay mirror casting. QR-code casting is available as an alternative. Android mirror casting requires the Lelink APP.

Q: Can I use the TV’s built-in Wi-Fi hotspot for casting?
A: Not recommended. When guests connect to the TV hotspot, they bypass hotel Portal real-name audit, which fails to meet Decree No.176 public internet access compliance requirements. In addition, TV Wi-Fi hardware has limited performance, suffering from weak signals and unstable casting, and is not fit for commercial use.
