Passport & HK/Macao/Taiwan ID Wi-Fi Real-Name Verification: Three Entrances for Multi-Channel Authentication

When foreign guests with passports or compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan check in, they often fail to complete Wi-Fi authentication if the portal only accepts mainland mobile numbers. This is a common compliance and service shortcoming for many hotels. Under Order No.176, real-name authentication applies equally to all internet users. Missing document verification channels creates compliance gaps for these visitors.

1. Why mobile SMS-only verification is insufficient

The Cybersecurity Law mandates real-name registration for all internet users, and mobile phone numbers are not the only valid identity credential. Passports, Mainland Travel Permits for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan residents are all legal identity documents. If SMS verification is the only option, overseas and cross-region guests will be blocked from Wi-Fi access. This hurts guest experience and leaves a compliance loophole: unregistered users’ online activities cannot be traced.

2. Three authentication entrances: SMS, WeChat and official documents

AINOPOL Portal supports more than ten authentication methods with multi-channel verification. The three most widely adopted entrances are listed below, displayed together on one authentication page for guests to choose according to their available credentials:

  1. SMS verification: Receive verification code via mobile number
  2. WeChat / Mini Program verification: Scan the QR code to finish authentication; this also serves as a touchpoint for hotel membership operations
  3. Document verification: Supports mainland ID cards, passports, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan travel permits. Document information will be recorded into the core identification tuple upon approval.

3. How document information is embedded into audit logs

No matter which authentication channel a guest uses, a unified session identifier will be generated once verification passes. Core data including mobile number or document ID, MAC address, IP address and login timestamp will be recorded. Cloud Audit binds subsequent internet behaviours to this session ID and retains records on a rolling basis in the cloud for at least 180 days.
Guests authenticated with passports can be traced in the log system with the same standard as users verified by mobile phone numbers.

Beyond the built-in Portal and local log storage on Dream Gateway, AINOPOL Cloud Portal and Cloud Audit can connect to existing carrier optical modems in plugin mode. The original forwarding and access logic of the optical modem remains unchanged. Hotels do not need extra hardware or on-premises log servers to enable multi-channel real-name authentication covering passports and HK/Macao/Taiwan identity documents.

Real-name verification for foreign and cross-region guests is not an exceptional workaround, but a standard authentication entrance. Enabling document verification channels helps hotels deliver a reliable international guest experience while closing compliance risks.

FAQ

Q: Does Wi-Fi real-name authentication only support mobile phone numbers?
A: No. Cloud Portal supports SMS, WeChat / Mini Program, and document verification (mainland ID card, passport, HK/Macao/Taiwan travel permits).

Q: Can passport numbers be recorded in internet access logs?
A: Yes. After document verification, the passport number will be written into the identification tuple. Cloud Audit links browsing activities by session ID and retains logs, enabling the same traceability as mobile-number-based authentication.

Q: Can WeChat authentication integrate with hotel membership systems?
A: Yes. WeChat / Mini Program authentication can act as a membership engagement entry. The specific interconnection implementation depends on project delivery scope.
